Kymco Agility 125 & GY6 Carburetor Cleaning and Idle Mixture Adjustment Master Guide

The Kymco Agility 125 uses a CV carburetor with an automatic electric choke. Due to ethanol-blended gasoline, fuel sitting in the float bowl oxidizes rapidly, causing chronic idle stalling, throttle bog, and black smoke. This guide standardizes jet cleaning, float valve inspection, and idle mixture screw adjustment to restore factory idle and throttle response without unnecessary parts replacement.

1. Overview and Chronic Idle Stalling in Kymco Agility 125

The Kymco Agility 125 (and Like 125/150 series) uses a constant-velocity carburetor with an automatic electric choke (enricher). Over time, ethanol-blended gasoline oxidizes inside the float bowl, producing varnish deposits that clog the narrow pilot jet passage and produce:

Field Diagnostic Note: Before disassembling the carburetor, spray aerosol carburetor cleaner into the airbox intake while the engine idles. If idle immediately improves, the pilot circuit is partially blocked by varnish, confirming jet cleaning will resolve the issue without further teardown.

Field Diagnostic Note: Never run compressed air through the pilot jet at full shop pressure. Pilot jet orifices measure 0.35–0.38 mm and can be deformed by high pressure. Use a hand-pump blow gun at 30 PSI or less.

3. Step-by-Step Cleaning and Adjustment Procedure

Step 1: Remove Seat Bucket and Detach Carburetor

  1. Lift the seat bucket and unbolt the four 10mm bolts securing the under-seat compartment.
  2. Loosen the screw clamps on the airbox intake hose and intake manifold rubber boot.
  3. Disconnect the fuel line, vacuum line, and electric choke 2-pin wiring plug.

Step 2: Remove Float Bowl and Inspect Varnish Build-Up

  1. Place the carburetor over a clean tray and remove the 3 or 4 Phillips screws securing the float bowl.
  2. Separate the bowl and inspect the bottom for green varnish or gummy fuel residue.
  3. Remove the brass float pin and drop out the plastic float and fuel needle valve.

Step 3: Remove and Unclog Main Jet and Pilot Jet

  1. Use a flathead screwdriver to unscrew the brass main jet and pilot jet from the center tower.
  2. Spray carburetor cleaner directly through the tiny center orifice and side emulsifier holes.
  3. Poke a thin copper wire through the pilot jet passage until light is clearly visible through the hole.

Step 4: Inspect Diaphragm and Reassemble Jets

  1. Remove the top vacuum cap and inspect the rubber diaphragm for pinhole tears or stiffness.
  2. Reinstall the cleaned pilot jet and main jet, tightening gently to 2 Nm — brass threads strip easily.
  3. Reinstall the float, pin, and fuel needle valve; verify float movement before closing the float bowl.

Step 5: Set Idle Mixture Screw and Factory Idle Speed

  1. Gently turn the brass idle mixture screw clockwise until lightly seated — do not overtighten.
  2. Back the mixture screw out counter-clockwise exactly 2.5 full turns.
  3. Reinstall the carburetor, start the engine, let it warm up for 5 minutes, and adjust the idle speed screw until idle stabilizes at 1,600 RPM.
